چکیده

The management of enterprise-wide information requires that metadata should be shared and globally accessible by all the heterogeneous products found in today’s information technology environment. OLAP metadata includes various information about objects and the relationships among them in an OLAP system. OLAP tools are provided by different vendors and run on different hardware and software platforms. But there still is no standard for a logical OLAP model. To use OLAP tools efficiently, users need to be able to move metadata between tools or between tools and a repository. In this paper, we have designed a metadata interchange model that can be shared among OLAP systems and have implemented a prototype called EDMIS as the OLAP metadata interchange system. The OLAP metadata interchange model that we propose in this paper is designed using XML DTDs. This model lists typical mismatches among the data models of commercial OLAP tools and proposes methods to overcome these differences. The OLAP metadata interchange system enables users to browse and search OLAP metadata on the Web. In addition, if a user wants to use the metadata in another OLAP system, the implemented system can automatically create new cubes using metadata in the repository. In order to validate the usefulness of the proposed system, we have used OLAP products such as MS SQL Server Analysis Services, Pilot DSS and Oracle Express.

A Model-Based Software Architecture for XML Data and Metadata Integration in Data Warehouse Systems

The demand for data integration is rapidly becoming larger as more and more information sources appear in modern enterprises. Extensible Mark-up Language is fast becoming the new standard for data representation and exchange on the World Wide Web, e.g., in B2B e-commerce, making it necessary for data analysis tools to handle XML data as well as traditional data formats. This paper presents arch...

Collaborative Analytical Processing - Dream or Reality? (Panel abstract)

Majority of current Business Intelligence Data (BID) is spread out between incompatible tools like RDBMSs, OLAP engines, and spreadsheets. Bridges between them allow interchange of data and metadata thus providing a small degree of BID sharing, but due to lack of metadata standards, this sharing is limited to speci c installations. This creates an unacceptable situation where an analyst cannot ...

A Software Architecture for XML-Based Metadata Interchange in Data Warehouse Systems

Interchanging metadata between software components of a data warehouse environment is the foundation for leveraging the various benefits of an integrated metadata management for data warehousing. Besides a common understanding of metadata syntax and semantics, both a standard interchange language and an interchange mechanism for metadata are needed. We therefore propose a software architecture ...

Towards Introducing User Preferences in OLAP Reporting Tool

This paper presents an OLAP reporting tool and an approach for determining and processing user OLAP preferences, which are useful for generating recommendations on potentially interesting reports. We discuss the metadata layers of the reporting tool including our proposed OLAP preferences metamodel, which supports various scenarios of formulating preferences of two different types: schema-speci...

GMLA: A XML Schema for Integration and Exchange of Multidimensional-Geographical Data

The integration among DW, OLAP and GIS has been given considerable attention in recent years by many researchers and industrial corporations. This may be a result of: 1) DW/OLAP can improve GIS spatial queries whereas, 2) a GIS can provide better support to deal with the DW/OLAP geographic data. Some research about this integration has already been done. However, these approaches do not deal wi...
